Team Selection (Section 5.4 of ACFYHA By-Laws)
Annual Tryouts:
The Coaching Director and Level Director will schedule sufficient time for team tryouts when scheduling ice time. Each Division shall select players for each team at annual tryouts which shall be open to all players of appropriate age. Tryouts are not optional. Any player that does not attend tryouts will be placed on a team at the discretion of the Coaching Director in conjunction with the Level Director and will usually be placed on the weakest team in that division unless extenuating circumstances exist.
Selection Criteria:
Tryouts shall consist of skill evaluation in the areas of skating, passing and receiving, stick handling, shooting, play making, stamina, and checking (if applicable). In addition Goaltenders will also be evaluated based on their skill in making saves and controlling rebounds. Players will also be evaluated in scrimmage or game situations to determine positional play and competitiveness. Players will be evaluated by the adults knowledgeable in the game of hockey appointed by the Coaching Director. Final selections will be made by the Coaching Director in consultation with the evaluators, Division Directors and, if known, the head coach of the respective teams.
On occasion there may be an excessive amount of player registration in a particular age or team bracket. Every effort will be made to place all players up to the maximum number allowed by CHC team registration rules. Travel Teams will consist of no more than twenty (20) players (including two (2) goalkeepers).
Tryout Procedure:
Every effort will be made to provide a fair and consistent approach to the tryout process. Players will be evaluated on the above Selection Criteria skill areas and weighting on individual skills will be dependent on individual division groups as defined by the USA Hockey and ACFYHA Division Skill Level guidelines for Mite, Squirt, PeeWee, Bantam and Midget. Tryouts staff will be selected by the Coaching Director and will consist of the following:
Mite and Squirt
- minimum of 3 evaluators
- 1 on-ice drill instructor
- 2 on-ice assistants to help maintain flow
PeeWee, Bantam and Midget
- minimum of 3 evaluators
- 1 on-ice drill instructor
- 1 or 2 on-ice assistants as required
Please note that the designated warm-up night is just that. Players will be run through the drills for the following tryout and no review or selection will be made.
Announcement of Team Selection:
All team player selections will be posted to the Avon Hockey Web site within two days following the last travel team tryout scheduled. www.avonhockey.com
In addition, individual team roster listings will be posted at the Avon Old Farms Rink on a best case basis and is conditional on open access to the rink. No individual calls will be made to players. Coaches may not have a complete roster listing until the night of their first practice.
Final team selection is subject to approval by the ACFYHA Board of Directors.
Tryout Feedback Mechanism:
Every effort will be made to provide a fair and equitable tryout process of all players involved. The selection process is based on input from the Coaching Director in consultation with selected evaluators, Division director and, if know the head coach of the respective team. In some cases the selection committee may vary between respective division tryouts. Should any player or parent have questions with regard to the individual team roster, the selection process or the tryout procedure, we would request that all inquires be addressed to the following individuals following the final day of tryouts:

Only the above individuals should be contacted as no other individuals or Board Members will have full access to all of the individual team selection criteria.
